Caribou, ME – Residents in northern Maine are preparing for heavy snowfall and frigid temperatures, as winter weather takes hold starting tonight and continuing into the weekend. The National Weather Service predicts up to 4 inches of snow overnight Wednesday into Thursday morning, with temperatures falling steadily as the week progresses.

According to the National Weather Service, snow is expected to begin around 7 p.m. tonight, with steady accumulation through the early morning hours. By Thursday morning, travel conditions may become hazardous, with slick roadways and reduced visibility likely, particularly on Route 1 and surrounding highways. Drivers are advised to use caution and allow extra time for their commutes.

Thursday’s high will hover near 34°F, with a brief break in snowfall before temperatures drop overnight. Lows are expected to plummet to 8°F by Friday morning, ushering in a bitterly cold weekend. Friday will remain dry but frigid, with highs barely reaching 19°F. Northeast winds may create wind chills near single digits.

More snow is likely late Friday night into Saturday morning, though accumulation amounts remain uncertain. Highs on Saturday will struggle to climb past 20°F, and winds from the north could create additional challenges for outdoor activities.

By Sunday, clear skies and sunshine are expected, but temperatures will remain low, with a high near 13°F and lows potentially dipping below zero overnight.

Residents are urged to prepare for the cold and monitor forecasts for updated snowfall totals. Proper precautions, such as dressing in layers and limiting outdoor exposure, are essential in such frigid conditions.
