Lubbock, Texas – Tennis ball-sized hail and 70 mph winds could slam into the Lubbock region Wednesday night, as a fresh wave of severe storms targets the Caprock and Rolling Plains.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, a powerful cold front will push into the South Plains by late Wednesday, igniting widespread thunderstorms from Lubbock to Childress. Storms could become severe quickly, with flash flooding possible on major roadways including U.S. 62 and U.S. 84 overnight into Thursday morning.
Locally heavy rainfall is forecast to fall during the overnight hours of Wednesday into Thursday. The threat for flash flooding is greatest in low-lying areas and poor drainage zones in cities like Lubbock, Plainview, and Snyder. Drivers should avoid flooded roads and monitor real-time updates from TXDOT and local emergency officials.
The risk doesn’t stop there. The NWS warns that severe storms are expected again Thursday afternoon and evening, bringing more damaging wind and hail threats to the Caprock region. Storm chances continue daily through at least Monday.
