Lubbock, Texas – Strong, fast-moving thunderstorms could develop across portions of the South Plains late Saturday afternoon, bringing wind gusts up to 60 mph to Lubbock and surrounding communities. The National Weather Service warns the strongest storms may occur between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m., mainly in isolated pockets but with potential for sudden, dangerous wind bursts.
According to the NWS in Lubbock, areas including Plainview, Muleshoe, Morton, and Childress are under a marginal severe weather risk. While hail is not expected to be a major concern, forecasters caution that strong outflow winds could lead to downed tree limbs and make driving difficult on open highways such as U.S. 84 and U.S. 87.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items and be prepared for quick changes in weather conditions. Outdoor events late Saturday should have a shelter plan in place in case storms approach. Lightning will be a hazard even in weaker cells.
Storm chances are expected to diminish overnight, with calmer weather returning Sunday. However, forecasters say additional thunderstorm chances could return by midweek.
