New Orleans, Louisiana – Drivers across southeast Louisiana and coastal Mississippi could face near-zero visibility by 1 a.m. Friday, with dense fog and smoke combining to create dangerous travel conditions during the early morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in New Orleans, a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. Friday, with visibility dropping to one quarter mile or less across a wide stretch of the region. This includes Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Slidell, Houma, Gulfport, and Biloxi.
The greatest خطر comes in low-lying and coastal areas, especially along I-10, I-55, and U.S. 90, where fog may rapidly thicken before sunrise. Officials warn that localized “super fog” could develop near marsh fires, where smoke mixes with moisture, leading to sudden and severe visibility drops.
Morning commuters should plan for significantly slower travel times, use low beam headlights, and maintain extra distance between vehicles. Sudden stops and chain-reaction crashes become more likely in these conditions.
Fog is expected to gradually lift after 9 a.m. Friday, but additional advisories may be issued if visibility remains poor into mid-morning.
