Lake Charles, La. – Heavy rainfall across southwest and central Louisiana could trigger flash flooding through Thursday evening, with some areas bracing for up to a foot of rain and rapidly rising water levels.

According to the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, a Flood Watch remains in effect from 1 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday evening for 23 parishes across Louisiana, including Lafayette, St. Landry, Calcasieu, Vermilion, and Rapides. Rain totals of 4 to 8 inches are expected, with isolated spots possibly reaching 10 to 12 inches.

Lake Charles, Lafayette, Alexandria, and Opelousas are among the cities most at risk for localized flash flooding. Low-lying areas, including those near the Mermentau and Vermilion Rivers, could see dangerous rises. The Lower Neches, Sabine, and Calcasieu basins may experience significant river flooding if rainfall intensifies.

Drivers are urged to avoid water-covered roads and use alternate routes where possible. Residents should charge electronic devices, prepare go-bags, and stay alert for rapidly changing conditions. Those living in flood-prone zones should consider moving valuables to higher ground.

The Flood Watch extends through Thursday evening, with more advisories likely as rainfall continues. Stay tuned to local alerts and be ready to act if warnings are issued.
