Mooringsport, LA – A 3.1 magnitude earthquake struck seven kilometers south-southwest of Mooringsport late Friday night, shaking the quiet community. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported the tremor occurred at 5 kilometers below the surface at 11:19 p.m.
According to USGS data, the quake’s shallow depth amplified the ground shaking. While minor, it was felt by some residents in surrounding areas. The event’s intensity registered as Level III on the Community Internet Intensity Map, meaning it was “weak” but noticeable indoors.
There are no reports of injuries or significant damage at this time. Earthquakes of this magnitude are uncommon in Louisiana but can serve as reminders of regional seismic risks. Experts encourage residents to review emergency preparedness plans even for smaller quakes.
Mooringsport locals are encouraged to share their experiences with the USGS “Did You Feel It?” program to aid scientists in refining seismic models.
