Marquette, MI – A high swim risk has been declared along the beaches of Marquette and Alger Counties on Sunday due to dangerous rip currents and waves. Lake Superior is experiencing strong currents that could prove fatal for swimmers, especially near break walls and piers.
According to the US National Weather Service in Marquette, the affected areas include Middle Bay near Presque Isle, Little Presque Isle, McCarty’s Cove, Au Train Bay, and several parts of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, including Grand Sable Dunes and Miners Beach.
Swimmers are urged to avoid the water and keep clear of dangerous zones near piers and break walls. The waves in the region are expected to be life-threatening, especially at exposed areas like Grand Marais Harbor.
Local authorities emphasize that staying out of the water is crucial to ensuring safety. Beachgoers should heed warnings and stay away from these high-risk areas throughout the day.
