Galax, VA – A flash flood emergency has been declared in Carroll County, Wythe County, and the city of Galax in southwestern Virginia. Heavy thunderstorms have drenched the area, with rainfall totals reaching between 5 and 8 inches, leading to life-threatening conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, the flash flooding is severe, with rainfall rates of 1.5 to 3 inches per hour expected to continue. Additional rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches are possible, worsening the already dangerous situation. Affected residents are urged to seek higher ground immediately.

This flash flood emergency affects low-lying areas, creeks, and roads, making travel hazardous. The NWS has emphasized that most flood deaths occur in vehicles and urged people not to attempt crossing flooded roads. The cities of Wytheville, Galax, and Hillsville are among the hardest hit.

Residents should remain vigilant and avoid flood-prone areas until the storm passes. Emergency responders are on alert as conditions continue to worsen.
