Fort Collins, CO – A police pursuit in Larimer County shut down part of Interstate 25 on Monday after a suspect allegedly drove the wrong way, causing multiple crashes before being taken into custody.
According to the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began around 12:30 p.m. on September 15 in south Loveland when deputies attempted a traffic stop. The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Thomas Mazza, allegedly refused to pull over and began driving recklessly, heading south in the northbound lanes of I-25. Deputies used a PIT maneuver to stop the vehicle and arrested Mazza at the scene.
During the pursuit, a motorcyclist crashed while trying to avoid the suspect’s vehicle. The rider was taken to a hospital and later released. Another adult passenger in the suspect’s car was not injured. Authorities closed I-25 for a period of time during the investigation.
Mazza was booked on multiple charges, including vehicular eluding, five counts of attempted criminally negligent homicide, false imprisonment, DUI-drugs, and domestic violence enhancement. The Sheriff’s Office added that Mazza was already out on bond for two other cases. Prosecutors have requested a $100,000 cash-only bond in the latest case.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are asking anyone with information or video of the incident to contact the Sheriff’s Office or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers of Larimer County.
