Grand Rapids, Michigan – Strong northwest winds are triggering dangerous swimming conditions along the Lake Michigan shoreline this weekend, with waves up to 6 feet and powerful rip currents expected to last through Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, beaches from South Haven to Manistee will face 15 to 25 mph winds out of the northwest, fueling rough surf and rapidly changing water conditions. The entire stretch is under a high swim risk, especially in red-flag areas including Grand Haven, Holland, Muskegon, and Ludington, where the agency is urging beachgoers not to enter the water.

The high waves and rip currents are particularly hazardous for inexperienced swimmers and children. Lifeguards may not be present at many beaches, and water temperatures have dropped significantly compared to last weekend, increasing the risk of cold shock.

Officials recommend staying dry when waves are high, heeding beach flag warnings, and avoiding piers and breakwaters, which can be especially dangerous during strong surf events.

Wave conditions are expected to remain hazardous until late Monday. Additional advisories may be issued if winds persist into next week.
