Milwaukee, WI – A heavy freezing spray warning remains in effect for southern and northern sections of Lake Michigan, presenting significant hazards for mariners until Tuesday afternoon.

The National Weather Service issued the alert for areas south of a line from Two Rivers, WI, to Manistee, MI. This includes waters offshore from locations such as Port Washington, WI, and South Haven, MI. Freezing spray at rates of 2 centimeters per hour or greater could rapidly accumulate on vessels, making operations dangerous.

According to the advisory, the warning for southern Lake Michigan will last until 3 p.m. CST on Tuesday, January 21. For northern regions, including waters from Seul Choix Point to Rock Island Passage, the warning begins at 6 a.m. Monday and ends at 6 a.m. Tuesday.

The rapid ice accumulation may render electronic and mechanical systems inoperative and create instability on decks and superstructures. Mariners are advised to remain in port if possible, avoid affected areas, or take mitigation measures to reduce risks.

Authorities stress the importance of preparation and caution during these hazardous conditions. For updates, visit the National Weather Service website.
