Buffalo, NY – A lake effect snow warning has been issued for parts of New York starting Monday afternoon. The National Weather Service (NWS) predicts snowfall totals of 8 to 16 inches in the hardest-hit areas.

The warning affects Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and Southern Erie counties. The advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. Monday until 4 a.m. Thursday. Strong winds, gusting up to 35 mph, will likely cause drifting snow and significantly reduce visibility.

According to the NWS, heavy snow will fall in narrow bands, making travel conditions dangerous. Monday evening and Tuesday morning commutes are expected to be heavily impacted, with roads becoming snow-covered and slippery. Visibility may drop to near zero at times during the heaviest snowfall.

Residents are urged to exercise caution if they must travel during this period. The combination of high snow accumulations and strong winds could lead to localized power outages and delays in road-clearing efforts. Authorities recommend stocking up on essential supplies and staying updated on weather reports.

The NWS encourages the public to submit snow measurements and conditions via its website or social media channels. These reports help meteorologists track snowfall patterns and issue timely updates.

As conditions rapidly deteriorate, officials warn that even short trips could become treacherous. Travelers are advised to monitor updates and prepare for delays.

Stay informed about weather changes, and check local road conditions before heading out.
