Syracuse, NY – A significant lake effect snowstorm is expected to continue through Sunday, bringing heavy snowfall and hazardous travel conditions across Central New York.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Binghamton, areas including Madison, Onondaga, Northern Oneida, and Southern Oneida counties could see an additional 10 to 20 inches of snow, with some spots in western Oneida County potentially receiving up to 2 feet. Gusting winds of up to 35 mph are likely to exacerbate conditions, creating areas of blowing snow and reduced visibility.

The NWS noted that the heaviest snow is expected south of the New York Thruway corridor early Saturday, gradually lifting northward by Sunday. The Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in effect until 4 p.m. Sunday, urging residents to prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions and difficult travel.

Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, but if travel is unavoidable, motorists should carry emergency supplies, including a flashlight, food, and water. For updated road conditions, call 511.

Stay tuned for further updates as this winter storm progresses.
