Allegany County, NY – A significant lake effect snowstorm is expected to bring dangerous travel conditions to Allegany County beginning Friday morning. Heavy snowfall is anticipated, with totals ranging from 8 to 14 inches by Monday evening.
According to the National Weather Service, the snow will intensify across the northwest part of the county early Friday and continue through the weekend. Friday morning and evening commutes will be severely impacted, with visibility reduced to near zero during heavy snow bands.
Residents should avoid unnecessary travel. If travel is unavoidable, prepare for hazardous road conditions by reducing speed and allowing extra travel time. Snow accumulations will create treacherous conditions on rural roads and highways, especially in areas where snow drifts form.
The weather can change rapidly during lake effect events, with heavy snow in one location and clear skies a few miles away. Drivers are advised to carry an emergency kit, including blankets, flashlights, and extra clothing.
The five-day forecast shows continued snowfall into Monday, with temperatures ranging from the mid-20s to low 30s. Winds will contribute to drifting snow, making secondary roads especially challenging.
By late Monday, the snow is expected to taper off, but cleanup will take additional time. Officials urge residents to monitor updates and check road conditions before heading out.
Prepare for winter’s full force this weekend and prioritize safety when traveling in the affected areas.
