Syracuse, NY – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Central New York until early Thursday morning. Snowfall from lake effect bands is expected to add up to three inches of accumulation across several counties.
According to the National Weather Service, the advisory covers Madison, Onondaga, Southern Cayuga, and Southern Oneida counties. Hazardous conditions could persist through the evening commute on Wednesday and into the night. The advisory warns of slippery roads and reduced visibility, urging drivers to travel with caution.
Lake effect snow patterns can cause rapidly changing conditions. Drivers may experience heavy snow in some areas and clear roads just a few miles away. These unpredictable shifts could lead to accidents if drivers fail to slow down or account for poor visibility.
In addition to Onondaga and surrounding counties, Tompkins, Cortland, and Chenango counties are also under a separate advisory until Wednesday afternoon. Snowfall rates could create additional challenges during the morning commute in those areas.
Residents are advised to check local road conditions by dialing 511 and to prepare for slower travel times. Wind gusts may exacerbate blowing snow, further complicating travel plans. Officials recommend delaying non-essential trips until the snow subsides.
This weather system is expected to taper off by early Thursday morning, but lingering icy conditions could remain overnight.
