South Bend, IN – Northern Indiana and southwest Michigan experienced heavy lake effect snow over the past two days, with totals reaching over 6 inches in some areas.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Northern Indiana, St. Joseph, MI, received 6.2 inches, the highest total reported. Other notable areas include Stevensville, MI, with 5.9 inches and South Bend, IN, reporting 3.3 inches. LaPorte County, IN, saw up to 2.0 inches in localized areas.

Meteorologists attributed the snow to a combination of system-wide precipitation and lake effect bands from Lake Michigan. Conditions caused slick roads and reduced visibility, prompting travel advisories.

The snowfall has now tapered off, but cold temperatures remain. NWS advises drivers to exercise caution, particularly on untreated roads.

Residents in affected areas are encouraged to clear sidewalks and driveways to ensure safety. Updates on potential future storms will be shared as forecasts develop.
