Lake County Coroner Reports Gary Teen’s Death as Homicide

Merrillville, IN – An 18-year-old Gary resident was confirmed dead after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds on Saturday evening, prompting a homicide investigation by Lake County authorities.

Xavier Maypray was identified by his family at the Southlake Methodist Hospital Emergency Room, where he was pronounced deceased at 9:08 p.m., according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office. The shooting occurred at 1010 E. 49th Ave. in Gary, Indiana.

A forensic autopsy was performed Monday at the Lake County Forensic Center in Crown Point. The autopsy confirmed that Maypray’s death resulted from multiple gunshot wounds and was ruled a homicide. 

The incident is under investigation by several agencies, including the Gary Police Department, Gary Fire Department, Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force, and Lake County Sheriff’s Department Crime Scene Investigation Unit. 

Lake County authorities are urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward as they continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Maypray’s death. The community is reminded to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to local law enforcement.
