Lafayette, La. – Scorching heat and scattered afternoon thunderstorms will dominate the rest of the July 4th weekend across south Louisiana and southeast Texas, with heat index values topping 105° in some cities.
According to the National Weather Service, the subtropical high will continue to trap hot, moist air over the region, leading to daily chances of thunderstorms—especially during the afternoon hours. Rain chances increase Sunday, with places like New Iberia, Lake Charles, and Opelousas seeing up to a 55% chance of storms by 3 p.m.
Temperatures will remain in the low to mid 90s, but high humidity will push the heat index into triple digits—up to 107° in Crowley and 106° in Lafayette. Winds from the south-southeast at 5–10 mph will offer little relief. Travel and outdoor activities should be limited during peak heat, and residents are advised to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged sun exposure.
Looking ahead to Monday and Tuesday, more widespread storms are possible with rainfall totals reaching 1.5 to 2 inches in some areas near Baton Rouge and eastward. Flash flooding isn’t expected, but localized downpours may cause ponding on roads.
Thunderstorm chances remain daily through midweek as hot and humid conditions persist.
