Key West, Fla. – Boaters off the southwest Florida coast are urged to remain alert as a possible waterspout churns near Ellis Rock Light, bringing dangerous winds and lightning through 2 p.m. Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Key West, the storm was spotted around 1:25 p.m., roughly 7 nautical miles northwest of Ellis Rock Light, moving northwest at 10 knots. Radar indicated wind gusts exceeding 34 knots and the potential for a waterspout developing along its path.

The affected area includes Gulf waters from East Cape Sable to Chokoloskee, 20 to 60 nautical miles offshore, beyond the 5-fathom line. While the system remains over open water, officials warn that sudden waterspouts can capsize vessels and lead to rapidly building seas and severe lightning.

Boaters are advised to stay below deck, ensure all passengers are wearing life jackets, and avoid navigating through the storm. Lightning and blinding downpours may reduce visibility and create additional hazards.

The Special Marine Warning remains in effect until 2 p.m., and additional advisories may follow if the system intensifies or shifts closer to land.
