Jackson, Kentucky – Strong thunderstorms are expected to develop across eastern Kentucky Friday afternoon, bringing damaging wind gusts and flash flooding risks through the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, thunderstorms will begin forming after 4 p.m. Friday, with the heaviest activity expected between 6 p.m. and midnight. Storms could produce wind gusts over 40 mph, isolated flash flooding, and dangerous lightning, especially along major roadways like I-64 and US-23.

Localized flooding is a key concern, especially in low-lying areas of Breathitt, Floyd, and Perry counties. Motorists should avoid water-covered roads and delay non-essential evening travel. Outdoor events and youth sports may face delays or cancellations.

The unsettled pattern continues through Tuesday. Saturday brings more storms between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., followed by scattered showers Sunday and Monday. While rainfall amounts may vary, some storms could drop a half inch or more in just a few hours.

Residents should keep phones charged, secure outdoor items, and review local emergency alerts. Spotter activation is not expected, but NWS cautions conditions may change quickly.
