Jackson, Kentucky – Thunderstorms will return early next week, bringing rounds of rain and lightning that could disrupt travel and outdoor plans starting Monday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, scattered showers will redevelop by early Monday, with thunderstorms becoming more widespread after 2 p.m. as temperatures climb into the upper 60s to mid-70s. The unsettled pattern will continue through Tuesday, with multiple waves of rain and embedded thunder expected across eastern Kentucky.
Communities including Pikeville, Hazard, London, and Somerset could see periods of moderate rainfall and brief downpours, especially during the Monday evening commute and again Tuesday afternoon. Roads like the Hal Rogers Parkway and U.S. 23 may become slick during heavier bursts, while isolated thunder could bring short-lived visibility drops below one mile.
While severe weather is not currently the primary concern, lightning and locally heavy rainfall may impact outdoor work and school activities. Residents should charge devices, monitor alerts, and avoid flooded roadways during heavier showers.
This follows a colder weekend, with sub-freezing valley temperatures expected late Friday night into Saturday morning and again early Sunday. Warmer air will help fuel the storm activity by Monday.
