Louisville, KY – Strong to potentially severe thunderstorms are forecast to sweep through northeastern Kentucky Monday afternoon, bringing hail and damaging winds to cities including Louisville, Lexington, and Ashland.

According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, the primary threat window is from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. EDT. The system could bring medium-risk gusty winds and hail, with isolated lightning strikes and even a brief, low-risk spin-up tornado not fully ruled out. The agency’s Severe Weather Outlook places much of eastern and northeastern Kentucky in a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) zone, while areas stretching toward Bowling Green remain in the Marginal Risk (Level 1) category.

Residents across Lexington, Morehead, and Pikeville should remain alert through the evening commute. Travel disruptions and power outages are possible due to wind-downed trees or minor hail damage.

Preparedness tips include securing outdoor objects, charging devices, and avoiding driving during peak storm hours. This storm system follows a relatively calm spring period but reflects Kentucky’s typical pattern of fast-developing April systems.

The National Weather Service advises continuous monitoring of local alerts and NOAA Weather Radio through the evening. Updates will follow if the storm threat intensifies or expands.
