Lexington, KY – A tornado warning was issued early Thursday morning for multiple central Kentucky counties, placing Lexington and surrounding communities under urgent risk.

According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was detected near Harrodsburg at 2:13 a.m. EDT. The storm was moving northeast at 65 mph and is expected to impact Fayette County, including Lexington, until at least 2:45 a.m.

Residents in central Mercer, southern Woodford, southeastern Anderson, northern Jessamine, and Fayette counties were urged to seek immediate shelter. Radar indicated rotation within the storm, prompting meteorologists to issue the warning due to the potential for tornado development.

Specific areas of concern include Fayette Mall, the University of Kentucky Arboretum, and Dunbar High School by 2:30 a.m., with neighborhoods such as Meadowthorpe, Veterans Park, and Bryan Station facing impact minutes later.

The storm could cause flying debris, damage to homes, vehicles, and widespread tree loss. Mobile homes are especially vulnerable.

Emergency officials urge residents to move to a basement or interior room, avoid windows, and remain sheltered until the all-clear is given. The public should monitor NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts for real-time updates.
