Lexington, Ky. – Strong thunderstorms could rattle Eastern Kentucky Tuesday night, with wind gusts up to 70 mph and isolated hail threatening over 2 million residents until 1 a.m. Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a severe thunderstorm watch is in effect from 6:28 p.m. Tuesday through 1:00 a.m. EDT Wednesday, covering cities including Lexington, London, Danville, and Hazard. The primary concerns are damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning, and hail as large as ping pong balls.
Power outages and travel disruptions are possible, particularly along I-64 and I-75 corridors. Lexington and Richmond could see fallen limbs and slick roads overnight, while residents in Middlesboro and Hazard are urged to stay indoors during peak storm activity. Emergency managers advise securing loose outdoor items and charging devices in advance of possible outages.
This marks one of the most widespread severe weather watches in Kentucky this spring, stretching from Bowling Green to the eastern Appalachian counties.
The watch remains in effect until 1 a.m., with further advisories likely if storms intensify. Residents should monitor local alerts and avoid non-essential travel during peak storm hours.
