Frankfort, KY – Freezing rain and wintry weather are expected to impact Kentucky this weekend, bringing potential travel hazards and icy conditions statewide. The National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts freezing rain Saturday night into Sunday, particularly in western and central parts of the state, with roadways likely to become slick.

According to the NWS, rain will begin late Saturday, turning to freezing rain as temperatures drop near freezing. Areas near Paducah and Louisville could see significant ice accumulation, especially on bridges and overpasses. Motorists are urged to plan ahead, as hazardous conditions are expected to persist through Sunday evening.

Saturday will start dry, with mostly sunny skies and highs near 37°F before clouds increase late in the day. Rain will develop after sunset, with precipitation turning to a mix of freezing rain and sleet overnight. Sunday’s high near 38°F could bring some melting, but untreated roads will remain icy into Monday morning.

Those traveling along major corridors such as I-65, I-75, and the Western Kentucky Parkway should monitor local advisories and consider delaying travel if conditions worsen. The NWS also warns of possible power outages due to ice weighing down tree branches and power lines.

By Monday, drier conditions are forecast with temperatures near 40°F, but colder air will return by midweek, with highs only in the 20s.

Stay tuned for updates, and check local road conditions before heading out this weekend.
