Dodge City, Kansas – Drivers across western Kansas could face hazardous travel conditions by sunrise Sunday as a powerful cold front sweeps across the High Plains, triggering strong northwest winds capable of reducing visibility and pushing high-profile vehicles across highways.

According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, winds will rapidly strengthen early Sunday morning as the cold front moves through the region. Sustained winds are expected to reach 25 to 35 mph, with gusts exceeding 50 mph during the late morning and afternoon hours.

Communities across southwest Kansas — including Dodge City, Garden City, Liberal, Pratt, Hays, and Scott City — are expected to see the strongest winds between late morning and mid-afternoon Sunday. Forecast data shows gusts approaching 50 to 51 mph near Garden City around midday, with similar peak gusts expected across much of the region.

The strongest crosswinds may impact east-west highways including U.S. Highway 50, U.S. 56, and portions of Interstate 70, where trucks, RVs, and other high-profile vehicles could struggle with sudden gusts. Blowing dust is also possible in open fields, which could briefly reduce visibility in rural areas.

Utility officials also warn isolated power outages could occur if the strongest gusts develop during the afternoon peak.

Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor objects, delay towing or hauling if possible, and use caution on open highways. Winds will gradually weaken Sunday night as the front pushes farther east, but breezy conditions may linger into early Monday across western Kansas.
