Wichita, Kansas – A calm and sunny Monday in Kansas is just the eye before the spring storm surge. Wichita residents should prepare for a dramatic shift starting Tuesday, as rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds return in force.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, showers may begin as early as Tuesday afternoon, with an 80% chance of thunderstorms rolling through between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. Wednesday. Some storms could bring gusts up to 18 mph, with more rain expected through midweek. By Wednesday evening, another round of showers and possible thunderstorms will keep roads slick across Sedgwick County, especially along I-135, I-235, and K-15.

Drivers should avoid flooded or low-visibility areas during commutes, especially Tuesday night through Wednesday. Charge devices, secure outdoor items, and avoid unnecessary travel during lightning periods.

Spring’s warm start Monday—sunny and near 74°F—will give way to a cool, wet midweek stretch. Temperatures drop to the low 50s overnight Wednesday, with daytime highs stuck in the 60s through Thursday. Conditions should ease by Friday.
