Wichita, Kansas – Isolated strong thunderstorms could develop across central and southern Kansas late this afternoon, bringing 65 mph wind gusts, heavy rain, and dime-sized hail through midnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, storms are expected to begin forming around 4 p.m. Friday, with activity continuing into the overnight hours. While not everyone will see a storm, areas from Russell to Wichita and as far east as Emporia are under a Level 1 severe storm risk.
Cities including Hutchinson, Pratt, and Winfield could see damaging wind gusts and localized downpours. Outdoor plans and holiday travel may be disrupted, especially along U.S. Route 54 and I-135. Residents are urged to have a way to receive warnings and prepare for rapidly changing weather.
While the storms will remain widely scattered, any that form could quickly intensify. Storm coverage is expected to diminish after midnight.
