Wichita, Kansas – Scattered strong to severe storms could impact south-central and eastern Kansas between 1 p.m. and 11 p.m. Tuesday, with damaging wind gusts, large hail, and localized flooding possible.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, storms are expected to develop during the early afternoon and continue into the evening, especially in areas from Harper and Wichita east toward Chanute and Coffeyville. Some storms may bring wind gusts up to 65 mph and quarter-sized hail, along with torrential rain that could lead to flash flooding in low-lying areas.
Cities including Hutchinson, Winfield, Emporia, and Eureka fall within the risk zones. Emergency officials urge residents to stay alert for rapidly changing conditions and seek shelter indoors if storms approach. Motorists should avoid driving through flooded roads and secure outdoor objects that could become airborne in strong winds.
Localized storm intensity may vary, but this is the first widespread severe weather threat for the region since early May. Residents in zones labeled “1” and “2” on the NWS map should remain weather-aware throughout the day.
Additional updates are expected as the storm front develops. Warnings may be issued with little notice.
