Dodge City, KS – Residents in southwest Kansas are being urged to stay weather-aware this evening as severe storms are forecast to begin developing around 5 to 6 p.m. and move eastward across the region.
According to the US National Weather Service in Dodge City, storms are expected to initiate in areas near Tribune and Ulysses late Wednesday afternoon, where conditions are favorable for potentially severe weather. The agency has highlighted a red oval zone on its latest map, pinpointing the initial area of storm development, with a projected movement toward cities like Garden City and Dodge City.
The storms are expected to strengthen quickly as they track eastward, with threats including large hail, damaging winds, and possibly isolated tornadoes. Hail is currently projected to be the predominant severe threat. The most intense activity is likely during the early evening hours, particularly before the sun sets over the yellow-highlighted area of increased storm risk.
The National Weather Service advises residents in the affected areas to monitor weather alerts closely, have multiple ways to receive warnings, and be prepared to seek shelter if necessary. Conditions may evolve rapidly, and updates are expected throughout the evening as the system progresses across southwest Kansas.
Those in areas east of the initial development zone, including Dodge City and beyond, should remain on alert into the nighttime hours as storms continue their path.
