Wichita, Kan. – Strong storms are expected to roll across much of Kansas starting at 5 p.m. Wednesday, bringing the threat of 50 mph wind gusts and heavy rainfall that could impact roads through early Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, the window for severe weather spans from 5 p.m. Wednesday through 3 a.m. Thursday. Storm chances are highest in south-central and western parts of the state, with Russell, Hutchinson, and Harper all facing a 70% or greater likelihood of storm activity. Wichita’s chances sit at 68%, while Salina and Emporia are above 60%.

Drivers should remain alert for downed limbs, debris, and ponding on roadways, especially during evening commutes. Residents in low-lying areas should monitor alerts for localized flooding. The weather service advises securing outdoor objects and charging devices in case of outages.

Conditions will clear quickly by Thursday, with dry skies and highs near 70. Friday and Saturday are expected to be warmer, with highs returning to the low-to-mid 80s across most of the region.

Severe weather alerts remain in effect through early Thursday, with additional advisories possible if conditions worsen.
