Dodge City, Kansas – Severe thunderstorms could hammer southwest Kansas late Thursday afternoon, with the greatest threat between 4 p.m. and 11 p.m., including potential tornadoes, damaging hail, and wind gusts strong enough to snap limbs and down power lines.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, a Level 2 “Slight Risk” zone covers cities like Dodge City, Garden City, and Ulysses, where all severe weather hazards are on the table. A tornado or two is possible, along with damaging winds and localized flash flooding. The most intense storms are expected to form along a corridor stretching from Lamar, Colorado to Woodward, Oklahoma.
Residents in Ford, Finney, Seward, and Meade counties should prepare now—charge phones, secure outdoor items, and be ready to shelter quickly if warnings are issued. Storms could impact travel on U.S. Highways 50, 83, and 54, especially during the evening commute.
This is the first significant severe weather setup for the area in June and comes after a relatively calm spring. While Thursday’s storms are expected to clear overnight, more rounds of unsettled weather could follow into the weekend.
