Garden City, Kan. – Damaging winds up to 70 mph and large hail are possible across western Kansas through 10 p.m. Monday as severe thunderstorms develop rapidly along the Colorado border.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for 26 counties, including Finney, Gove, Cheyenne, and Grant. The watch remains in effect until 10 p.m. CDT, with isolated storms already forming along U.S. Highway 83 and I-70 corridors.

Cities like Garden City, Goodland, and Colby could see brief downpours, lightning, and wind gusts strong enough to topple small trees or power lines. Motorists along U.S. 50 and U.S. 160 are urged to delay travel if storms approach. Hail up to 1 inch in diameter is also possible.

Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items, remain indoors during thunder, and have weather alerts enabled on mobile devices. Emergency management teams in counties like Seward and Thomas are monitoring for rapid changes.

Storms are expected to taper off late tonight, but new watches or warnings could follow if storms redevelop along outflow boundaries.
