Wichita, KS – Residents across central Kansas are advised to stay alert this afternoon as severe thunderstorms could bring damaging winds, large hail, and even tornadoes. The National Weather Service has issued a severe weather warning for areas west of Interstate 135, with storms likely to develop after 2 p.m. Strong winds reaching up to 60 mph, hail the size of quarters, and the potential for brief tornadoes are the primary threats from this storm system.

According to the National Weather Service, scattered thunderstorms will form in the afternoon and continue through early evening. These storms have the potential to intensify quickly, producing large hail and damaging winds. The risk of tornadoes is also present, particularly along the I-135 corridor, which stretches from Wichita to Salina.

The threat for severe weather is expected to decrease after sunset, but residents should remain vigilant throughout the day and closely monitor weather alerts. Anyone traveling along I-135 should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions, including possible tornado warnings and severe wind gusts. The weather service advises securing outdoor objects and staying indoors during storms for safety.

Temperatures will climb to near 80°F today, with even warmer weather expected Tuesday.
