Wichita, Kansas – Two days of heavy rain-soaked central Kansas through Tuesday, with some communities recording more than 7 inches of total rainfall and experiencing localized flooding.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, Valley Center led the region with 7.29 inches, followed by 6.96 inches in northeast Wichita and 6.93 inches near El Dorado. Rain totals exceeded 6 inches at multiple locations across Sedgwick and Butler counties.
The deluge caused street flooding across the Wichita metro, particularly near low-lying intersections and underpasses. Water pooled along K-96 and U.S. Route 54, slowing traffic and prompting emergency crews to close several flood-prone roads. In El Dorado, emergency management teams monitored streams and creeks nearing capacity.
Though skies have since cleared, residents are still advised to use caution around waterlogged areas and to report blocked storm drains or infrastructure damage. Cleanup efforts are underway in affected neighborhoods.
While no additional rainfall is expected midweek, the saturated ground will keep flood risk elevated if more storms develop later this week.
