Wichita, KS – Kansas residents should prepare for dangerous fire weather conditions Friday as strong winds and low humidity create extreme wildfire risks. Fire weather alerts have been issued across the state, with gusts up to 60 mph expected in some areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, a Fire Weather Watch remains in effect Friday morning through Friday evening. Winds from the south will reach 30 to 40 mph, with gusts as high as 60 mph, particularly along and southeast of the Kansas Turnpike. Humidity levels will drop to as low as 19%, significantly increasing the chance of wildfires.

Officials warn that any fires that start will spread quickly and may become uncontrollable. Residents should avoid outdoor burning and report any signs of fire immediately. Travelers on Highway 14 and Interstate 135 should be cautious, as strong winds could make driving hazardous.

The fire risk remains high through the weekend. On Saturday, gusty winds and dry conditions will persist west of Interstate 135, while warm temperatures Monday and Tuesday will push fire danger into the “very high” category.

Five-Day Wichita Forecast:

• Friday: Windy, slight chance of showers, high 72°F

• Saturday: Mostly sunny, high 57°F

• Sunday: Sunny, high 63°F

• Monday: Sunny, high 78°F

• Tuesday: Partly sunny, high 80°F

Residents should stay updated with local forecasts and take precautions to prevent fire hazards.
