Topeka, KS – A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for much of north-central, northeast, and east-central Kansas from Monday afternoon through Monday evening, as strong winds and low humidity heighten wildfire risks.
According to the National Weather Service in Topeka, the affected area includes Republic, Washington, Marshall, Nemaha, Brown, Cloud, Clay, Riley, Pottawatomie, Jackson, Jefferson, Ottawa, Dickinson, Geary, Morris, Wabaunsee, Shawnee, Douglas, Lyon, Osage, Franklin, Coffey, and Anderson counties. The warning is in effect from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday.
Southwest winds between 10 to 20 mph, with gusts reaching up to 30 mph, are expected to create hazardous conditions. Relative humidity levels could drop as low as 16 percent, further increasing the risk of fast-spreading wildfires.
Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and remain vigilant, as any fire that ignites may spread rapidly under these conditions. Fire departments and emergency services will be on high alert.
The Fire Weather Watch may be upgraded to a Red Flag Warning if conditions worsen. Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather alerts and take necessary precautions to prevent accidental fires.
