Wichita, KS — Kansas residents should prepare for hazardous weather conditions on Thursday as temperatures rise and winds intensify, leading to a very high fire risk. The U.S. National Weather Service warns of strong south winds, with gusts expected to reach up to 37 mph, along with dry conditions, significantly increasing the fire danger across the region.

According to the National Weather Service, Thursday’s high temperatures will range from 84°F to 91°F. Winds will begin to strengthen in the afternoon, heightening the fire risk in Wichita and surrounding areas along U.S. 54 and I-35. The public is urged to avoid outdoor burning and take steps to secure loose objects that could be affected by gusty winds.

The forecast also includes a slight chance of thunderstorms late Thursday night, particularly across southeastern Kansas. However, any rain is expected to be light, offering minimal relief from the dry and windy conditions. Temperatures will cool down on Friday, with highs dropping to the 70s as a cold front moves through the area.

Residents are encouraged to stay updated through the National Weather Service’s alerts and take precautions to prevent fires. With low humidity and strong winds, conditions are ideal for fires to spread quickly, particularly near highways like U.S. 54. Cooler weather is expected for the weekend, with highs in the upper 60s and mostly sunny skies, providing some relief from the heat and fire risk.
