Wichita, KS – Residents near Wichita were lightly shaken early Tuesday morning after a minor earthquake struck just south of Milton, roughly 30 miles from the city.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), a 2.6 magnitude earthquake occurred at 3:22 a.m. CDT on March 25. The quake’s epicenter was located approximately 3 kilometers south of Milton, with a recorded depth of 8 kilometers.

While no injuries or structural damage were immediately reported, three individuals submitted “Did You Feel It?” responses to USGS, indicating light tremors were noticed across parts of south-central Kansas, including areas west of Wichita.

Earthquakes of this magnitude are typically considered minor but can be felt, especially during quiet overnight hours. Kansas, while not commonly known for seismic activity, has experienced an uptick in small quakes over the past decade, especially in southern regions.

Officials recommend residents review basic earthquake safety, including securing heavy furniture and knowing safe spots like interior doorways or under sturdy tables.

USGS continues to monitor aftershocks and regional seismic activity. Citizens are encouraged to report any shaking to contribute to earthquake mapping and analysis.
