Kansas City, MO – A major winter storm is forecast to bring heavy snow and dangerous ice to Kansas and Missouri this weekend, creating significant travel hazards and power outage risks. The system is expected to arrive late Saturday and continue into Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, northern Missouri and eastern Kansas have a 60–80% chance of receiving at least six inches of snow, with areas along and north of Interstate 70 facing the brunt of the snowfall. In southern Kansas and central Missouri, sleet and freezing rain are likely, leading to potential ice accumulations that could cause power outages and downed trees.

Officials are urging residents to prepare for treacherous conditions by avoiding nonessential travel and stocking up on supplies. Icy conditions are expected to make roads, especially bridges and overpasses, extremely hazardous. Emergency crews recommend having an emergency kit ready, including blankets, water, and nonperishable food, in case of prolonged power outages.

The storm’s intensity is expected to diminish by Monday afternoon, but bitter cold temperatures are predicted to follow, which could prolong icy conditions. Residents are encouraged to stay updated on the latest forecasts and advisories at weather.gov and to heed local emergency alerts.
