Amarillo, Texas – Six tornadoes touched down across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles on the evening of June 6, including a powerful EF-2 that narrowly missed Spearman, Texas, with 115 mph winds and a 9.5-mile path.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the Spearman tornado struck between 9:13 and 9:35 p.m. CDT, damaging small outbuildings and uprooting trees before lifting east of CR 281. It was the strongest tornado of the night and the only one rated above EF-0.
The other five tornadoes—documented in West Spearman, Northeast Gruver, Eastern Wheeler County, and two additional locations—were all rated EF-U, meaning they caused no measurable damage and could not be assigned a definitive strength. Each had brief tracks under 2 miles and occurred in rural areas, minimizing impact. No injuries or fatalities were reported from any of the events.
The tornadoes developed as a line of storms moved through the northeastern Panhandle, bringing brief but intense rotation. While the majority avoided populated areas, residents in Ochiltree, Hutchinson, and Wheeler counties were urged to stay alert during the event.
More severe weather could return to the region Sunday night. Residents should monitor NOAA Weather Radio and local alerts for any developing threats.
