Chiriaco Summit, CA – A Flood Watch goes into effect late tonight for portions of southern California as moderate to heavy rainfall approaches the region, according to the National Weather Service Phoenix.
The watch includes Chiriaco Summit and Joshua Tree National Park (West) and will remain in effect from late Friday night through Saturday evening. Forecasters warn that excessive runoff may lead to flooding in creeks, washes, low-water crossings, and other flood-prone areas. Box Canyon Road near Chiriaco Summit is among the areas where flooding may occur.
According to the NWS, a developing weather system is expected to produce moderate to heavy rainfall, with the highest totals focused across Joshua Tree National Park, where terrain features and desert drainages can channel fast-moving water during periods of intense rainfall. Even normally dry areas may flood quickly if rainfall rates increase.
The Flood Watch notes that rivers, streams, and low-lying roads could experience flooding, particularly during peak rainfall periods on Saturday. Forecasters emphasize that desert flooding can be sudden and dangerous due to rapid runoff and limited drainage.
Residents, travelers, and park visitors should closely monitor updated forecasts and remain alert for potential Flood Warnings. Those in flood-prone locations are urged to prepare for changing conditions overnight into Saturday.
