Joliet, IL – The Will County Sheriff’s Office has issued an urgent scam alert to residents, following several reports of fraudulent activities in the past week. According to the Sheriff’s Office, scammers have been using the Sheriff’s Office phone number and the name of a Sheriff’s Sergeant in their caller ID. The scams include false claims of arrest warrants, fraudulent sex offender registration fees, and fake jury duty obligations.

Residents are advised to be extremely cautious when dealing with phone and computer communications. Key recommendations include avoiding unknown phone numbers, not clicking on suspicious links, and never sending money or sharing personal information without verifying the legitimacy of the request.

The Sheriff’s Office emphasizes that scammers often pretend to be from trusted organizations, pressuring victims into immediate action and demanding payment through unconventional methods like Zelle, gift cards, or Bitcoin. The public is encouraged to educate themselves and vulnerable individuals about these tactics to prevent becoming scam victims.
