Jackson, MS – A severe weather threat is looming across central and western Mississippi as a widespread thunderstorm watch remains in effect for more than 40 counties, including the capital city of Jackson, until 12 a.m. CDT Monday.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 61 was issued Sunday evening at 5:05 p.m. CDT. The alert includes key counties such as Hinds, Madison, Rankin, Yazoo, Leflore, and Washington. Residents in these areas should prepare for damaging wind gusts, hail, and lightning as storms track across the state.

Cities like Jackson, Starkville, Greenville, and Vicksburg are at elevated risk. The line of storms could bring wind gusts exceeding 60 mph and hail up to one inch in diameter. Flash flooding is also possible in low-lying areas and poor drainage zones.

Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roads and remain alert for rapidly changing weather conditions. Power outages and minor structural damage could result from stronger cells.

Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor objects, monitor weather alerts via NOAA Weather Radio or mobile apps, and remain indoors during active thunderstorms.
