Watseka, IL – A countywide burn ban will take effect at midnight tonight across Iroquois County, prohibiting all outdoor fires until further notice due to heightened fire risks. The Iroquois County Emergency Management Agency, in coordination with the Eastern Illinois Mutual Aid Fire Association and the County Board, announced the decision on Wednesday.
According to the agency, the ban was enacted as a precautionary measure due to expected high winds and dry conditions, which increase the likelihood of uncontrolled fires. The order includes a prohibition on open burning of landscape waste, household trash, garbage, and the use of consumer-grade fireworks.
Fire Chiefs across Iroquois County have the authority to impose and enforce the ban, with penalties for noncompliance. A first-time offense will result in a $100 fine, with higher penalties for repeat violations. Residents with questions are advised to contact their local Fire Department or Fire Protection District.
Officials urge cooperation from residents to prevent fire hazards, emphasizing that preventing burns now can avoid property damage and the need for emergency response. The ban will remain in effect until further notice.
