Des Moines, Iowa – Drivers across Iowa could face rapidly deteriorating road conditions within hours Sunday as powerful winds up to 50 mph combine with falling and blowing snow, reducing visibility on major highways and open rural roads.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a developing winter storm will spread precipitation into the state Saturday night, beginning as rain or a wintry mix before colder air forces a transition to snow from northwest to southeast during the day Sunday. Northern Iowa could also see a period of freezing rain during the changeover.

The biggest concern arrives Sunday afternoon through late Sunday night as winds intensify. Sustained winds between 30 and 35 mph with gusts topping 50 mph are possible across much of the state, including Des Moines, Ames, Waterloo, and Fort Dodge. Peak gusts around central Iowa could reach roughly 44 to 48 mph Sunday afternoon and evening.

Those winds will blow freshly fallen snow across highways including I-35, I-80, and U.S. 20, sharply lowering visibility and creating strong crosswinds for trucks and high-profile vehicles. Areas farther north toward Mason City and Estherville may experience the most severe conditions with near-blizzard visibility at times.

Residents should secure outdoor objects, charge mobile devices, and reconsider non-essential travel Sunday evening as conditions worsen. Wind-driven snow and travel disruptions may continue into the Monday morning commute while cleanup and road treatment continue statewide.
