Des Moines, IA – A winter weather advisory is in effect for portions of western and north-central Iowa, with snowfall expected to create hazardous travel conditions through Friday evening. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that total accumulations could reach between 3 to 6 inches in affected areas.

According to the NWS, precipitation will move into western Iowa late Thursday before spreading across central and eastern Iowa overnight. While southern Iowa is likely to experience mostly rain, north-central areas will see significant snowfall. The advisory remains in effect from 9 p.m. Thursday until 6 p.m. Friday.

Road conditions are expected to deteriorate, particularly during the Friday morning and evening commutes. The snowfall, combined with near-freezing temperatures, could lead to slick roads and reduced visibility. Motorists are advised to drive cautiously and allow extra time for travel.

Cities impacted include Ames, Fort Dodge, Carroll, and Marshalltown, among others. Residents are encouraged to monitor local updates and check Iowa 511 for real-time road conditions.

Officials recommend preparing for potential delays and ensuring vehicles are equipped with emergency supplies. Those traveling should slow down, increase following distances, and remain vigilant for changing conditions.
