Des Moines, IA – A Red Flag Warning has been issued for parts of southern and central Iowa from noon to 8 p.m. Monday due to critical fire weather conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Des Moines warns that warm temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds will create an elevated wildfire risk.
According to the NWS, southwest winds will reach speeds of 20 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph. Afternoon humidity levels are expected to drop between 20% and 25%, significantly increasing the likelihood of rapid fire spread. Areas affected by the warning include Dallas, Polk, Jasper, Poweshiek, Cass, Adair, Madison, Warren, Marion, Mahaska, Adams, Union, Clarke, Lucas, Monroe, Wapello, Taylor, Ringgold, Decatur, Wayne, Appanoose, and Davis counties.
Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and take precautions to prevent accidental fires. Dry vegetation, combined with strong winds, could allow flames to spread quickly, posing risks to homes, farms, and infrastructure.
A Red Flag Warning indicates that dangerous fire weather conditions are either occurring or expected shortly. Residents should remain vigilant and report any signs of fire immediately to local authorities.
