Des Moines, IA – Subzero temperatures are gripping Iowa this week, with wind chills plunging as low as -21°F Thursday night into Friday. State officials warn residents to prepare for dangerous cold and slick roads as a wintry mix develops over the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service, tonight’s wind chills could lead to frostbite in under 30 minutes for exposed skin. Flurries are expected Thursday morning, with light snow accumulating across parts of central Iowa, including near U.S. Highway 20. By Friday, freezing drizzle could develop, creating hazardous travel conditions through Saturday.
Looking ahead, Friday’s high will reach 29°F, but wind chills will linger below zero. A stronger storm system will bring freezing rain late Friday night, transitioning to rain on Saturday as highs approach 39°F. However, icy roads are likely early Saturday morning, especially along I-35. Travelers should monitor road conditions and delay trips if possible.
Sunday will offer some relief, with temperatures climbing to 43°F, but slight rain chances persist. Early next week, another cold front may bring light snow and another dip in temperatures.
Residents are urged to bundle up, check on vulnerable neighbors, and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during extreme cold. Emergency kits with blankets, water, and flashlights are recommended for drivers.
