Des Moines, IA – Central Iowa residents should prepare for gusty winds and heightened fire danger today, especially near the I-35 corridor. Winds are forecasted to reach 30-40 mph this afternoon, combining with dry and mild conditions to create elevated fire weather hazards.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), temperatures will climb into the upper 40s today, well above seasonal averages. The combination of warm, dry air and strong southwest winds makes burning highly unsafe, with precautions urged for outdoor equipment use. Wind gusts will be strongest in northern Iowa, posing risks for unsecured objects and light vehicles.
Tuesday will bring similar conditions, with highs reaching 51°F and continued wind gusts of up to 40 mph. By Thursday, temperatures will peak near 54°F, followed by rain chances Thursday night into Friday.
With elevated fire risks and windy weather persisting, residents should stay alert to NWS updates and avoid activities that could spark fires.
